Surprised you gave it a B, considering your mixed feelings about it. I absolutely hated the thing, and I liked GITS 2. It's probably his most insecure movie, too, since he can't decide where to take it next; so he just pads it with pointless details.

'B' is my grade for something that isn't particularly bad but also isn't particularly good. Sky Crawlers is a visually gorgeous film, and its story isn't riddled with plot holes, contrivances, and such. It just didn't get to its point soon enough to do more with it. To its credit, I am now aware and interested in reading the series of novels it comes from. Didn't turn me off of the source material, so that's something.

I hear the novels explore the story in a more literal sense, basically suggesting that the guy's just going through reincarnation, while Justin Sevakis claims Oshii's approach is a giant middle finger against contemporary otaku.
