More info from Anime News Network. Apparently it is indeed nothing more than a publicity stunt.

Greatest publicity stunt ever?

The only thing that would make this more awesome is if in true Lupin fashion, Yasuo Yamada is revealed to be alive and the one who stole the statue.

Sorry if I'm a little slow, but what else could it have been?  ???

JoYi had some things she suggested earlier in the thread based on what she read on the Japanese sites. Something about boosting economic morale, etc.

Fujiko Lover just posted a link to a new Yuji Ohno & Lupintic Five album, and it's apparently the OST/BGM/Whatever you want to call it to the 21st Lupin TVS - set to be released early February. I'm wondering if all these shenanigans have something to do with the new special (therefore making all of this an excessively over-the-top publicity stunt) as it does line up with the string of events that are supposed to happen.

Geez. I've been wanting to keep on this but finals are killing me.

Huh.  I hadn't been here in a while, and I didn't even know this thread existed.  Maybe my post should just be moved here?

And that music on the site is indeed awesome, anyone know if it's from a released soundtrack?

It's called "Dangerous Zone," and it's on a few CD's -- the original '78 album, and the Mamo soundtrack.  There's a "Yuji Ohno remix" on the "Original New Mix 2005" CD, and there's also a totally new version (with an actual conclusion instead of a fade-out) on the "Angel's Tactics" soundtrack.

Oh ho ho~ so it goes on! No images of his notice are up yet, but multiple sites have reported that he's chosen his next target! Kuidaore Taro!

(Just a quickie translation of a few of things these sites are saying)
Quote from: Source-> RBB Today
And now the next target has been revealed as “ Kuidaore- Taro”.  O Lupin III, what do you gain from stealing the symbol of Osaka’s splendid Dotonbori?

Quote from: Source-> Mainichi
In a Dotonbori restaurant a sign, which appeared after hours, was placed on the "Kuidaore" doll which sits in front of the store, Taro is known as a symbol of Osaka.

Seems as though the pattern is going to be famous landmarks/symbols of popular areas of Japan. In the RBB Today source, it also mentioned this project as something fun and exciting to look forward to in this "dark depression", so this most likely is some sort of economic moral booster. Even if this doesn't have anything to do with a new Lupin release, this is still rather fun to watch.

Here's an idea, how about we on the forums guess what he'll steal from Japan next? It'd be funny if he stole something like the Hachiko statue or the giant automated crab in Osaka.
