TokyoPop North American division closing
« on: April 19, 2011, 03:18:33 pm »
Did I miss this on the board? TokyoPop closing it's North American division, citing the bankruptcy of Borders of a major cause. While I have my doubts about the impact Borders closing had on their profit margin; it is unfortunate that they are closing given how much Lupin manga they committed to publishing. I spotted this originally on the Yahoo! Lupin mailing list.

I was suggesting you pick up every copy of Lupin you can before the scalpers come in, but it looks like this sucker went OOP long ago.  :'(

I'm not surprised by all of this. Tokyopop's been going down hill for a while.

They canceled it because they were losing sales. FWIW, the series lasted longer in manga form than a lot of people would've probably expected.

Once Fruits Basket ended, they lost the bulk of their sales. Unfortunately, it's not a great surprise.

Gozar: Actually, from what I heard, they were in trouble when Kodansha didn't wanna do business with them anymore. Though, personally, I blame their problems on blowing their dough on the OEL stuff. Me, I'm just hoping someone will legally upload the translated Lupin manga on a digital platform so it can get a second chance.

Nothing really surprising that the manga rights will go back to their respective Japanese publishers, but at least Lupin will not be stuck in legal hell if any future American company decides to bring it back.

Update: Well, it looks like they're "back", and they're taking manga requests @ info@TOKYOPOP.com, so maybe they can at least bring over the newer Lupin manga titles if we bug 'em enough.
