"The Complete First TV Series" DVD Pre-release Thread
« on: February 05, 2012, 03:00:44 pm »
If anyone has any questions about this release that I am confident answering, I am happy to do so. Here's an FAQ to start us off:

Quote
Q: Did you design the packaging? Why is it the way it is?

A: No, but I saw an early version of the design and suggested some color changes. I mostly wanted the green in the background, as it's closely associated with Lupin's jacket color. There was a bit of back-and-forth and Discotek settled on the color combination we came up with. I wrote a back-of-package description as well.
That's the extent of my influence and knowledge.

Q: Will there be an English dub on the DVD?

A: The DVD will be Japanese audio with optional English subtitles only. If any episodes have an English audio stream, it's a commentary.

Q: When's the release date?

A: Discotek has announced the release date to be June 26th, 2012.

Q: Does this set include all 23 episodes?

A: Yes, and both the Widescreen and 4:3 versions of the Pilot Film.

Q: Has the series been edited from its original Japanese version?

A: From what I understand, not one bit.

Q: Will this set be region-locked to Region 1?

A: Most likely, yes. However, if I'm not mistaken, region-free players are readily available all over Europe, and many PC media players (ex: VLC, MPlayer) can and will ignore region codes reported by DVD-ROM drives.

Q: What extras will be included?

A: This is a complete and final list of what I've put together for extras (except the Pilot Film, of course--I had no hand in making that nor in editing its subtitles):

-Both Widescreen and 4:3 versions of the Lupin the Third Pilot Film

-Liner notes for each episode, including newly translated credits, trivia, references, jokes, and other miscellaneous information.

-Audio Commentaries on select episodes:
--Episode 3 by Reed Nelson
--Episode 4 by guest commentators Ryan Gilbert and Mike Lepore
--Episode 10 by Reed Nelson
--Episode 13 by guest commentators Ryan Gilbert and Mike Lepore
--Episode 23 by Reed Nelson

-Essays by Daniel Thomas MacInnes of The Ghibli Blog:
--Trains and Scalps: a two-part essay discussing Yasuo Ohtsuka and Isao Takahata's background
--The Big Note: An Introduction to Anime Riffs: Daniel explores his concept of anime "riffs," or self-referential callbacks
--La Dolce Vita and Lupin at Abbey Road: An analysis of the intro sequence of The Castle of Cagliostro

-Song Lyrics

-Weapons of Lupin the Third (a list)

-Vehicles of Lupin the Third (a list)

-Credits for the Lupin the Third Pilot Film

-A Filmography of Lupin the Third

Q: Are there any extras from the Lupin the Box set that are not included on the Discotek release?

A: Unfortunately, the clean openings and endings from the fourth disc are not included.

Q: What audio streams are used?

A: I do not know if the audio is both the new stereo mix and 2-channel mono or just 2-channel mono. Given Discotek's track record with including the R2 audio streams, it could be both.

Q: What does the final cover art look like?

A: Click for larger view:

Right, 2012, not 2011. Good call.

Pumped for this release. 'Bout time such an awesome, influential, timeless classic hits DVD in the states. Also, if you mention Miyazaki on the box, that'll probably help sales I'd imagine.

If anybody sees this for pre-order on Rightstuf, let us know.  8)

I'm pretty sure it mentions both Miyazaki and Isao Takahata on the top of the front cover and on the back of the package as well. Always a good idea to capitalize upon name recognition where it's applicable.

So has anyone placed their Pre-Order yet? I'm personally waiting on Rightstuf to have some site-wide sale or a Discotek/Eastern Star specific sale.

I'm not sure how to order this. I live in the UK and really want the Discotek set. I'm afraid to pre-order just in case I don't have enough money at the time of release. I'm also a little afraid to order something with a value over £25 from abroad as it might end up stuck at customs (this has happened to me before... the whole process is ridiculous.) I might just wait until it releases and then check how much it'd cost to import from Amazon and chance it...

You might watch for when Discotek puts up their own page. He might do international shipping directly, but I am not 100% on that. (His licenses might prohibit him from personally doing so.)

Thanks for the info, I'll keep my eye out. I'll buy it in a heart beat providing I have the money.

Sadly, I think this may be the case.
