Monkey Punch's Roman Phantom Thief Game Gets TV Anime
« on: November 08, 2012, 08:51:00 am »
Via ANN

Amusing to see characters drawn for a pachinko game get their own anime series. Let's hope it will be better than Gun-doh Musashi... Can't wait until January to see how it turns out.

Huh. Sounds pretty cool.

I know Monkey Punch is the same creator but seriously though this character could't look any more like Lupin.

Already posted in the "Etc." thread. Anyway, the twitter for it is @roman_anime, and the official site is here.

Edit: Also, give him a break on Gundo Musashi. Everyone has one of those misfires.  Look at how many jokes there are regarding Tomino's Garzey's Wing.

Considering the ANN page says it's about a Master Thief and his adventures in Feudal Japan era I can't help but think this was done on purpose.

If that is the case then that is an epic win!  ;D

Agreed. It's like Lupin with Jigen's beard. xD

I'll probably check out a few episodes of it.

That would be funny if this was distributed here and just went huge as a franchise.

"Etc."... That's an odd place to talk about it...

I've never seen the show or the jokes, so I can't comment either way. Not saying MP's version of Musashi is awful, but the animated version of it sure turned out that way.

Nek Minnut, Roman Phantom Thief is as big as Lupin.

ultimate: I could see Crunchyroll porting it over, since they missed out on Fujiko.

The official site just updated with profiles and character descriptions.

Edit: So if Fujiko's a semi-response to Bebop, is Roman a response to Samurai Champloo?

Edit 2: Notice the names are in English, too. They're obviously targeting international buyers on this one. C'mon, Crunchyroll, make up for missing out on Fujiko, dammit!

I've checked on the characters' seiyuu, just to see if any of them will share a voice with any of Lupin III's characters. As it turns out, neither will. So i made a rundown of the respective seiyuu's most recognizable roles, as to hopefully give you guys an idea of how the characters are going to sound like.

Roman = Kazuya Nakai (Roronoa Zoro from One Piece)
Koharu = Eri Kitamura (Sayaka from Madoka Magica)
Magoichi = Kenichi Suzumura (Shinn Asuka from Gundam series)
Okuni = Maaya Uchida (Izumi Yunomoto from Bodacious Space Pirates)
Yashihiro = Chihiro Suzuki (Kouta from Elfen Lied)
Hans = Takashi Matsuyama (Takeo from The Grudge)
Gennai = Kenichi Ogata (Genma from Ranma 1/2)
Kana = Saori Sudo (no noteworthy roles)

Often caught but never held for long, Lupin III brought the gentleman-thief into this century with his hi-tech antics and old-world charm.

That lady character in the show reminds too much of Fujiko for me.
