Yuji Ohno’s theme score is incredible
« on: August 18, 2016, 05:12:42 pm »
It reminds me of John Barry’s OO7 theme and Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther theme. It wonderfully combines both the suave and peppy aspects of jazz music into one very hip and awesome theme track.

And he's made so many variations of the theme over the years, I'm glad he still enjoys composing for Lupin.

Which rendition of the theme is your favorite? The original '77 version is probably my favorite, but I also quite like the '89 theme (http://youtu.be/avBAh0F6avE). I particularly like the opening 30 seconds. It never fails to get me excited for a great Lupin adventure whenever it's used in a TV special.

They all sound pretty awesome. But my personal favourites are the 77 theme (the original and classic) and the 97 theme (its trumpets and vocals are fast and epic).

Ohno has also done some lovely non-Lupin songs for the franchise too:

I think it was Japanese illustrator and Lupin fan Tad Hoshiya that said that the three men who defined Lupin the Third were Monkey Punch, Yasuo Yamada, and Yuji Ohno. I'm inclined to agree (although personally, I'd also add Miyazaki, but that's just me)

My favorite is probably the first Red Jacket opening, as mentioned earlier. My second-favorite is a little strange, in that I don't like it as BGM for the TV series, but in the context of "Mystery of Mamo", which, being The Movie, felt like it needed a different version of the theme, one that prepares the viewer for the fact that this isn't the TV series, this is something bigger (sorta like how the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie used a different take on the theme than the show).

Aside from the theme song, my favorite bit of Lupin music is, without a doubt, Super Hero. The lyrics are cheesy, but also fit Lupin's character (in fact, it feels like he wrote it himself), and you can't help but get pumped up when it appears. I'm also fond of Lovin' You (Lucky). Such a mellow, sweet song that really doesn't sound like anything else you find in anime. The individual character themes are fantastic as well, especially Tornado and Zenigata March.

Also, did Ohno do Sexy Adventure? Because that one's great, too.

I really love the 1989 theme. It always cheers me up.
BTW, I didn't know about 2016 version. Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks from my part, too! It looks it's from his last album

And responding to the main topic, I really don't know if I have a favorite Lupin theme. To be honest, I love most of them!

Even the ones from Tomoyasu Hotei (2014 live action) and James Shimoji (Gravestone), which Ohno didn't contribute to, I think.

Lupin '80 (the version used in Castle of Cagliostro) is best Lupin.

For me, I would say it's a toss up between Lupin '80 2005 ver. (used in Angel Tactics)

or Lupin '08 Hard & Beat ver. (used in Sweet Lost Night)
