Episode 8 discussion: "Who Has the Black Notebook?"

What did you think of this week's episode?

It was pretty intense. This Albert guy makes my blood boil.

I feel sorry for Lupin.

Anyone have a gif of Goemon trying to use his phone?

This series just keeps getting better for me. Loved Goemon trying to use his phone, loved how Lupin and Albert have a certain history(hoping it's more rivalry thing and not an Albert loved Lupin and got shot down thing). Loved that Albert is just as competent as Lupin, it makes him seem as a truly worthy villain. With how things are going I would really like to see Nyx make an appearance.

I love Albert! He's dangerous and it feels like he can give Lupin a run for his money, which is always fun to see. As far as their past is concerned, I like the theory that Albert is Lupin's relative (cousin, half-brother, something like that) who decided he wanted nothing to do with the Lupin family legacy. I wonder what he wants to do with the black book. I don't want to think his reasons for grabbing it are the same as the former undercover agent's because that'd feel like a loss of potential. I hope there are lots of nice twists in store for us as the series goes on. The fact that Lupin was prepared to kill Albert with a car bomb makes it seem like there's way more bad blood between them than the typical "enemy from the past" plots this franchise has done.

But mainly, now that we have a gay main character in this franchise who isn't a joke or an offensive stereotype, I don't really want to see him be a 100% evil villain who'll die in the end. I need him to have sympathetic or reasonable motivations for what he's doing.

Albert makes his move. He is a wily adversary on par with Lupin. Of course, I felt Lupin was more carried away with rage than usual, even Jigen picked up on it.

I'm getting some distinct homo vibes from Lupin and Albert. Maybe they were lovers? If so, then this is the first time where Lupin is bisexual.

LOL Goemon not able to handle a phone, so anachronistic.

That new Lupin theme was very sad and beautiful.

I've gone back to the previous episodes to look at some things and got interested in lots of seemingly random details. I wonder if any of these things will be relevant.

Albert works for DCPJ, which is different from DGSE which the agents currently targeting Lupin are from. In the news clips that Fujiko was watching in episode 5, they also name dropped DGSI as having contributed significantly to Albert's art forgery investigation. I can't remember if we learned how Gaston died, but he was skilled at forging art and Albert was at his funeral, so there could be a connection there as well. The series has been really good at dropping tiny details that then turn out to be important later, so I'm hoping we'll have a really interesting espionage/corruption plot to look forward to. Perhaps a bit of a stretch, but I'd love to see Lupin expose the child porn ring that kidnapped Ami when she was a kid. I could easily imagine that powerful people were involved with that, so the black book could tie it all together.

Besides the argument that I never saw Lupin as gay or bisexual,
I am sure that there is nothing homo between Lupin and Albert, since Albert's last name Andresy,
which I believe is the same as the original Arsene Lupin's mother's last maiden name. So they must be related somehow.
Maybe Albert is Lupin's only living blood relative.
And something really bad probably happened in the past, likely due to Albert betraying him, making Lupin hate his only living relative.
The preview for next episode seems to show Lupin and Albert's past connection.

Anyways, Albert could become even more an interesting villain, especially if the past of Lupin's family gets revealed through him.

BTW, Goemon trying to use the cell phone but failing was funny. Also funny when he said Merci to the French kids who helped him, LOL.
I liked how Jigen appropriately described him as "a walking anachronism".  ;D
