I just want to meet at least one person in real life who loves Lupin just as much as I do. I'm in Japan right now and I still haven't found a single person who is a fan of Lupin III.
Don't sweat it too much. I "fell in love" with "Lupin" in my high school days. We had a Japanese exchange student and he didn't think Lupin was anything that special (he wouldn't even finish watching "Babylon" because Marciano's voice actor was "too gay"). I was interested in a couple anime fan-girls in those days also, and neither of them could've cared less about Lupin, even after seeing "Cagliostro," which is so VERY awesome.
Over time, I grew to accept that Lupin wasn't the be-all, end-all of anime, and have expanded my interests a bit, perhaps losing my passion entirely for the franchise on the whole, even. However, my lack of interest doesn't suddenly make other anime valid. Most anime is bad, packed with boring-as-dirt dialogue, poisonous non-endings, and maybe some pretty pictures of cute girls here and there. Some Lupin is also quite bad, but thankfully not all of it. It sometimes tries to pull the "dialogue-heavy" trick but it's not so easy with Lupin: it's usually easily seen for what it is, like a lot of the final scenes in "Angel's Tactics."
In all honesty, I did have a friend who liked Lupin, but he mostly just liked "Cagliostro." We grew up in Jr. High and High School together and lived very close by each other, so we spent a lot of time at each other's houses. Probably our greatest collaborative discovery in anime was Miyazaki. I read about Disney's licensing coup in an issue of Wizard magazine at his house (I think I have his old copy of that issue somewhere around here). When I learned "Kiki" had come out on VHS, I combed the town trying to find it, but no store had it. I think half the stores I called thought I was looking for a pornographic film ("Kiki's Delivery Service? HMMMM...let me check on that one..."). When I spotted it on a pellet at Costco, I snagged it immediately and watched it multiple times with my friend. I wanted to see more of the guy's movies. I was at semi-local video chain Hastings and spotted "Castle of Cagliostro" and saw Miyazaki credited on the back. I hesitated, knowing it was an older film, but my friend and I watched it probably a bazillion times together, renting it over and over, watching a pirated copy, watching the Manga DVD, watching the Japanese DVD with older dub....yeah, we watched the crap outta that one. If we had nothing else to do when we hung out, it was watch "Cagliostro."
The last time I saw him, before he died of cancer caused by self-neglect, I gave him a DVD copy of "First Contact" to watch in his hospital bed. I don't know if he enjoyed it (I don't even remember if he'd seen it before then), or even listened to my crappy commentary, but I doubt he enjoyed the movie as much as we had thoroughly enjoyed "Cagliostro" together so many times before.
So, long story short: don't try so hard to make "Lupin" friends cause they'll never love it as much as you do and you'll probably outlive them anyway. All dark humor aside, you'll want to find something else to have in common with your friends besides a specific show. My friend and I almost never hung out for a good five years because the things we had in common kept disappearing (living near by, same religion, shared media interests, etc.). So, if you have friends but none of them "get" Lupin, that's okay. At least you still get a friend out of the deal, right?
EDIT: There was one other person that comes to mind. (Spoiler'd for even more ranting.)a girl dressed up as Fujiko I met at a local anime convention. She was kind of attractive, so I pursued her until I found out she was just flat-out nuts. She loved Lupin but she didn't "get" it. She thought it was a really romantic show. "Romantic? Lupin?" I thought. Her favorite episode is the Lake Ness Monster episode from Part II because it shows Fujiko's "romantic relationship with Lupin." As more authentic proof of her craziness, in a telephone conversation about the "Sailor Moon" series, she once pronounced "Mercury" as "Mer-CURRY" instead of "MERK-yer-ee." When I corrected her as politely as I could while chuckling, she responded curtly, "I have a college education." Of course, she went to a private, liberal arts-heavy college (for theater arts, as I recall), so that made her response all the more laughable for me. She also thinks that the "Sopranos" shows that the Mafia are "good people" just trying to make sure their own are taken care of. Did we watch the same show? That said, though, she really is a nice enough person, but she spends so much time being angry about unimportant things, acting needlessly "in-character" as anime personas, or simply behaving self-absorbed that it can be easy to overlook her good side sometimes.
