Title: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: RedTail on April 05, 2007, 12:03:15 pm
Rules:

1. If you know the correct answer or just want to take a guess at the question posed, go ahead and post it.
2. Within 24hrs, the first person who answers the question correctly will be noted by the question asker and be issued one point.
3. Within the next 24hrs, the person who answered the last question correctly is responsible for posting another question or will forfeit the point earned.
4. After 24hrs, if no one answered the question correctly, the person posting the question earns three points.  He must then give the correct answer and furnish some sort of proof to collect the points.  Anyone may ask a question then.

Guidelines:

Your're allowed to ask any question you want that relates to Lupin III.  If you want to ask an easy question, ask an easy question.  If you want to ask a hard one, by all means, challenge us!  Just make sure you're not vague and that you provide enough information so that others might have a reasonable chance of actually getting it right.  If the mods or I deem a question to not follow these guidelines, we reserve the right to throw it out.

Other Info:

1. Each month, I'll tally everyone's scores and update the "Hall of Fame."  The hall will appear at the top of this thread (in this post, basically).
2. The mods and I will try to sort out any kinks in the game, but we're not necessarily excluding ourselves from playing.
3. Reed has asked that when you go to verify who answered your question correctly (or if no one did), that you try to do it in the post the question was originally asked (use the "modify" button).
4. If you have any questions or want to leave feedback, I've got a separate thread for that right here (http://www.lupinthethird.net/forums/index.php?topic=106.msg689#msg689).

March Scores:

Prizes:

In an effort to boost participation, I'm giving away a prize this month provided we get at least ten new players.  You can choose from any of the following:

Question 1:

What's Lupin's least favorite food according to the first series and Babylon?  IIRC, I think he's even allergic to it...

Questions should be directed to this thread (http://www.lupinthethird.net/forums/index.php?topic=106.msg689#msg689), but the prizes are for this month's winners.  Everyone gets a fresh start!

Actually, the food Lupin is shown to abhor in "The Man They Call Magician" is not squid, but octopus.

Question #2: Sometime in the early '90s, Bye Bye Liberty Crisis was shown, subtitled in English, on an American broadcast TV station. Tapes of this broadcast subsequently made it into fansub trading circles, with the commercials intact. In what state was the TV station?

Question the Third:
There are at least two things that can keep Jigen from being a sharpshooter.  Name one of them.

Question the Third:
There are at least two things that can keep Jigen from being a sharpshooter.  Name one of them.

Losing his hat—he needs the brim to line up shots. (Though some of the anime, especially the first-series episodes, have been somewhat haphazard about observing this.)

In Tokyo Crisis Jigen has a toothache that prevents him from shooting accurately.

Also, in $1 Money Wars, Jigen has trouble with Lupin's gun (after he loses his own) because "Guns are like women, and Lupin's only listens to him." (He has a similar problem with a "loaner" gun he buys later on.) This cheerfully contradicts other sources, like Albatross: Wings of Death where he pots a half-dozen missiles with Zenigata's automatic, but c'est la vie. (Though, having watched Fuma Conspiracy recently, perhaps I shouldn't say c'est la vie. :) )

How about an injured right hand (1st series)?
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Robotech_Master on April 07, 2007, 12:29:44 am
That would be another one. Though oddly enough Jigen has absolutely no problem shooting with his left when he's cutting out the target in "The Man They Call Magician."

And you have identified both of them.  The floor is yours, sir.

Question IV:

Only one feature-length animated Lupin III adventure (nb: that I know of, but I've seen all of them except the most recent and one other, so I'm pretty sure) does not make any use whatsoever of a version of Yuji Ohno's signature Lupin theme (Lupin '78, '80, '89, etc.).

Which one is it?

Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Robotech_Master on April 08, 2007, 10:41:37 am
Correct! It was back when they were still in the habit of using a Bond-style vocal OP song (which they did for three films: Cagliostro, Babylon, and Fuma) and putting the Lupin tune somewhere else in the film, before they'd come up with Lupin '89 and started using it as the OP and the vocal song as the ED.

Fuma was kind of the "Never Say Never Again" of Lupin films, being made on such a cheap budget that it had neither the original voice actors for the Lupin gang, nor any Ono Yuji music at all.

The next question is yours!

Boy, coming up with a question is harder than I'd thought.  But how about this:

Whenever Lupin's second series character design is used in a production today, there is one minor change to his wardrobe.  What is it?

His tie is yellow instead of pink.

His tie is yellow instead of pink.

That's the answer I was looking for!  Personally, I don't see why they changed it.  It looks fine to me in pink, especially since they alternate that outfit with the Mamo combo, which also features a yellow tie.

You're up, Zoo Station.

Here's a tricky one: What do Lupin III and the anime Captain Tsubasa share in common? I'll narrow it down: has something to do with the TV series (Pink jacket)...
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Robotech_Master on April 09, 2007, 06:18:12 pm
Both of them were manga that have spawned multiple separate TV series, the second of which was called "Shin" ("New") Series Name in both cases.

Sorry, the correct answer is: In the Italian versions, they both share the same opening song, as evidenced in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owHEEVv5zi4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owHEEVv5zi4)

Next question...

Oh, come on now. You should have phrased your question better, as I did indeed come up with something that both series share in common, even if it wasn't the answer you were looking for.

He specifically mentioned the pink jacket series, which unless I'm mistaken, was not titled "Shin Rupan Sansei: Part III".  I'm giving him the 3 points.

Anyway, in as per your question via PM regarding who goes next, it's covered by Rule 4:

"4. After 24hrs, if no one answered the question correctly, the person posting the question earns three points.  He must then give the correct answer and furnish some sort of proof to collect the points.  Anyone may ask a question then."

As for whether or not that rule will continue to stand, I don't know.  For now though, anyone can ask the next question.

All right then…

Question 6.0: What Miyazaki/Takahata character (not counting Lupin and the gang, of course) appears very briefly in The Fuma Conspiracy?
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Reed on April 11, 2007, 06:04:06 pm
Since I'm doing an extra for the Fuma rerelease (and thus have been watching and rewatching the movie), I guess I should know this one.

Papa Panda from Panda Kopanda a.k.a. Panda! Go, Panda!

He's on one of the blankets being hung to dry by Zenigata's female family member (wife?) in the opening credits.
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Robotech_Master on April 11, 2007, 06:29:34 pm
Mental note for the immediate future: ixnay on the Fuma questions. :P

Well done! (I thought the character in question was actually Panny given the proportions of the figure, but close enough.) Yasuo Ohtsuka was also an animator on Panda Kopanda, so it's not surprising he'd stick in a reference. I suspect the panda plushie in Goemon's fiancee's room may be another reference to said show.

The next question is yours!

3. Within the next 24hrs, the person who answered the last question correctly is responsible for posting another question or will forfeit the point earned.

Well, it's been more than three days,so does this mean that Reed lost his point? If so then what happens next?

Since nobody answered that question, here's another:

Question #I've Lost Count: A seiyuu from Castle of Cagliostro also appeared, in a different role, in another anime that included several parodies of/references to famous scenes from Cagliostro, in a series of still images.

Name me the seiyuu (or both characters the seiyuu played) and the other anime. (Once you have one, the other should follow.)

Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Reed on April 21, 2007, 03:02:39 am
I want to say Sumi Shimamoto (Sumire, also Clarisse in Cagliostro) from Here is Greenwood episode 3 (cleverly labelled "Here is Greenwood III" after the Cagliostro parody) but the Cagliostro scene in it wasnt exactly all still frames.

EDIT Heh. I have had the Giant Robo Eye of Vogler box (which includes the Ginrei OAV) for months and have never watched beyond volume 1. This is what I get for it.
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Robotech_Master on April 21, 2007, 11:33:53 am
Well, you're half right. Maybe the other half doesn't follow as readily. (I'm glad I added the "still frames" qualifier.)

A hint: the scenes parodied include the "running in wetsuit from spotlights" shot, the "taking off wetsuit to reveal disguise" shot, and the casino flashback—and there's also a shot with someone dressed like the Archbishop in it, though not a direct reference to a specific shot.
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Robotech_Master on April 22, 2007, 08:11:38 am
And the answer is: Sumi Shimamoto, Clarice in Cagliostro, Agent GinRei in the Giant Robo GinRei OAV.

All right, an easy one:

Question: In a car chase early in $1 Money War, there is (arguably) a very brief visual reference to the Castle of Cagliostro chase scene. What is it?

(You should only need to pull out your DVD for this one. :) )
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition

The ashtray full of cigarette ends, I think.
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Robotech_Master on April 22, 2007, 11:18:23 am
While that may be true, it's not the one I'm quite looking for. They've had a full ashtray a lot of times, not just during that chase. This is something that just took about a second to happen, but was so obviously a callback to the old chase (as it happened there too) that I just burst right out laughing.
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition

Is it Lupin's Fiat getting pushed against the guard rail and having the head light smashed as a result the same way Clarisse's Citroen had the same thing happen.
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: palehorse864 on April 22, 2007, 05:03:06 pm
I should add that after the opening chase, when discussing the treasure, they have a very similar view out their windshield of a truck and a car, if i'm remembering the opening of cagliostro correctly. That's probably so insignificant you weren't looking for it though.
Title: Re: Lupin the Trivia - April Edition
Post by: Robotech_Master on April 22, 2007, 07:22:23 pm
Palehorse — While that's not the one I was looking for, that's undeniably another one, so the point is yours.

(The one I was thinking of was the bird flying through the car's cabin when they went through the woods of Central Park.)

In the original manga and Green Jacket TV series, a time-traveller named Mamou Kyoskue was introduced.  He claimed that, in the future, a decendant of Lupin's killed his father.

Question: what was the decendant's name?

I actually got around to tallying the results so here we go:

1. Robotech_Master - 8
2. thnikkaman - 7
3. Fujiko Lover - 2
4. Lupin the Third - 1
4. palehorse864 - 1
4. sprak - 1
4. Zoo Station - 1

You can PM me your prize selection and address (if you choose one of the DVDs), RM.

Oh, and I'm not going to be running another trivia thread if it isn't already obvious.  We just didn't get the sort of participation I was hoping for.  If anyone else wants to run it though, be my guest.
