Alcatraz Opening and Imaishi
« on: March 15, 2015, 08:40:04 pm »
Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill are two of my favorite anime and this is partly due to the direction of Hiroyuki Imaishi. I love his exaggerated and dynamic visual style and while it can be too much for some, I can appreciate it just because it never looks dull even when they use shortcuts.

Now Imaishi started out as a key animator and has actually done quite a few Lupin III projects. The one I am talking about seems to show his style the most.

Now then, this clip shows the opening of Alcatraz Connection. As you can see, most of the animation is workmanlike. Nothing bad but it doesn't stand out either. Starting where Lupin swings on the chandelier and ending where Fujiko puts on her leather outfit, Imaishi takes over and man does it show. ;D

Since Yuzo Aoki is not very active anymore and Imaishi is probably the best living director/animator combo in Japan who truly understands "cartoony" aesthetics in the traditional sense, so he'd probably be the best bet for a TV series that replicates the atmosphere of the manga.

Hell, Panty & Stocking is proof enough of that. Panty can act like a female manga-Lupin and the pacing & length of each story feels very Monkey Punch-like.

I'd be interested in seeing Studio Trigger work on a Lupin show, or an OAV even. The studio operates on a unique style (fast-paced, flashy and intense) that would suit Lupin very well (and he's had various styles in his long history). These clips from Trigger shows give an idea of what I mean:

Kill la Kill

Ninja Slayer

Cutie Honey
(actually this wasn't by Trigger but Imaishi himself worked on the show)

It could work out very well.

I would love to see a Studio Trigger animated Lupin III series, with Imaishi at the helm ! :D

However, they tend to focus on their own licences, nowadays, and with the announcement of a full
"Little Witch Academia" series, I think they will be pretty busy for a while.

Still, recognized "authors" in japanese animation have been known to be hired to work on licences so it's not
at all impossible.

As you all said, Imaishi and his colleagues have the perfect style and strategies to make a very energetic Lupin series.

But I don't know if TMS is interested by their services.
Time to play the game, time to get a chance !
